Advanced Practicum |
The Chicago Children’s Clinic advanced practicum experience is intended for students who have already completed their basic assessment and therapy practica and are looking for more specialized experience in the assessment of neurobehavioral disorders, and the treatment of autism. At our office, we offer comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, and also offer Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) for children with autism. Growing from the body of literature from applied behavior analysis (ABA), PRT is an evidence-based treatment for children with autism that has resulted in outcome data reflecting that 90% of children who were nonverbal at age 3 learned to speak by age 5. These, among other results published widely over the past 20 years have led the researchers and clinicians at the University of California, Santa Barbara, directed by Bob and Lynn Koegel, to begin a dissemination project in which clinicians are trained to fidelity in the techniques, and then advanced clinicians, such as Dr. Daniels, are trained not only in how to implement the techniques, but also how to train others. This training of trainers model has been introduced only within the past 2 years, though the Koegel's have been developing the treatment for over 20. The Chicago Children's Clinic was chosen to be the first Chicago-area treatment setting to work closely and collaboratively with the UCSB to disseminate this evidence-based treatment. UCSB researchers and clinicians come to our Chicago office to train the practicum student in the technique with a 2-day workshop, and then Dr. Daniels provides video-taped and live supervision of their work with children with autism. Dr. Daniels’ supervision, in turn, is supervised by the UCSB team to ensure that we are all meeting treatment fidelity benchmarks necessary to result in meaningful improvement for the child with autism.
